Intermas Biorope as an alternative to synthetic mooring lines

Do you want to know more about our biodegradable and compostable rope in development? Boat Industry magazine talks about our moorings solution which find nautical and port applications.

The work on the Biorope began with mussel farming. The catinage nets used to protect the mussels are now made of conventional plastic. At the end of their use, they are too dirty to be cleaned and are thrown away. Non-recyclable and single-use, they will be banned within 3 years. So we worked on a biodegradable and compostable material" explains Christian Guyomar, responsible for this market on the European Atlantic coast, based in Brittany.

For the Aquaculture activity, where the products are applied in the marine environment, it is even more important. Since those products, when are not used correctly, can directly contaminate the environment. Either due to meteorological effects, misuse, or simply due to human carelessness.

Our products range can be recycled to reuse in other applications. Intermas Group holds a company dedicated to recycling, IntermasNetsRecycling. It is dedicated to recycling scrap from the Intermas Nets production process and recycling plastic materials from public or private companies that collect urban waste deposited in collection containers and make an initial selection and classification. Recycling is a key part of the Group, since its integration in our production process creates additional synergies in our scrap management and, furthermore, protect the environment. Intermas Group goes also one step further and has started working on BIO solutions.

At IntermasGroup, our BIO range consists of BIOCOMPOSTABLE products from biocompostable certified raw materials.*

Intermas Group, as a company committed to the environment, invests efforts, time and resources in aquaculture projects whose objective is none other than to protect the environment around us. In these projects, we focus on sustainable solutions without forgetting the performance and technical characteristics required by many applications. Our main objective is to develop a rope that respects the environment, especially the sea, and to protect our common future.

Intermas is working on the development (research phase) of biodegradable ropes for multiple applications. And in the case of aquaculture, for artisanal fishing and tuna fishing (Biofads).

*The products manufactured in the Intermas Nets S.L facilities and called BIODEGRADABLES are manufactured 100% from OK-COMPOST certified biocompostable materials by the Vinçotte certifying entity according to the applicable regulations: UNIEN13432:2002 and ASTMD7081.
INTERMAS NETS BIODEGRADABLE extruded products indicate that they are environmentally friendly plastics as they are manufactured with raw materials thats how optimal biodegradability in aerobic, anaerobic, marine and composting conditions, according to the information provided by our suppliers.
